FIRE.241 Die With Zero-Real Life

Please ignore the obnoxiousness of our location. I was out of my element…

While hanging out on a beach in St Barths, talking about our motorcycle/scooter adventures of the day with the $lackers, Mark reminded me that Die With Zero references  St Barths.  The author gave examples of life chapters and abilities. Or maybe it was memory dividends. Or maybe it was about sharing some of your resources with loved ones.  Either way, I was on rarified ground (sand).

I do get the irony of it all, frugal, $lackers in St Barths.

I’ve written about this before, and I will write about it again–having loved ones in your life, a community, being with those who are important, is so incredibly amazing.

Having this family and community is not something I ever thought would be a thing for me. I never envisioned this as part of my life.

If you’ve been to St Barths you understand how amazing and interesting it is. Beautiful, out-of-the-way paradise that has two routes in/out; a TINY plane or yacht.  It’s not your usual, or even just upscale Caribbean Island.  It is a whole other level.

The level of bling and wanna-bling is unnerving.  Stores sell t-shirts from just under 100 euros to well over, just for a t-shirt.  Yes, there are better deals in the 40 euros range.

Is this a FIRE island?  Is this a FI option?

We were all lucky that one of our friends was able to rent a house for us for a week in paradise.  The friend wanted to share a slice of their savings with family to show us part of their family history.

I will say we all had a nice, reasonably priced vacation on St Barths.  We didn’t partake in anything luxurious, but we did rent motorized vehicles for fun, we snorkeled, we hiked, and we beached.  https://seabob.com/?

We had deep discussions.  We shared vision and goals/dreams.  We planned for the future.  We talked about life issues.  We challenged each other.  We made each other better in differing ways.

It boils down to: we did things together and built invaluable memory dividends.  Priceless.

In takeaway, I would say we lived a nice sliver of Die With Zero, the good parts: invest some assets on/with others, do activities now, find your freedom, and savor the memory dividends.
