FIRE.248 Presentation Tips

Wow, my last post was a long listen to Chris’ podcast, and before that was a really long (for me) post.  I thought this would take less of your time this month.

Often, a presentation is not solely about the topic.  The presentation you are watching is actually about someone sharing part of their soul with you.

It is someone sharing their being, their deep-down interest

For many speakers, they are not scared of public speaking–the act of standing in front of people and talking–but they are frightened of feeling like they are naked in front of you and having their chest torn open, and what you will think of them.

That is because they are opening up.  Opening up in front of a group, a group of strangers.

You may not realize it specifically, but there are multiple parts in their slide deck, in their speech, and in their pauses, where they are standing there wide open.

Next time you watch a presentation, think about what that person is opening for you.  Think about how much thought, effort, and bravery they put into this process.

It is fair that some presentations will not resonate with you.  That is totally normal.  Most presenters hope that maybe they shared something that will stick with you and be there when it will help you in the future.

Either way, if you get a chance, go speak to the presenter at some point and thank them.  You might know more about them than much of their general friend group does.

If you happen to have lived parts of their presentation, parts that resonated with you, tell them.  Specific points/details help everyone get better.

Because you are exceptional, you (we) don’t need to operate the same as most folks.  However, using this perspective may help see them.
